PRAGUE IN APRIL

Prague usually turns green with spring around mid-April and by the end of the month you can enjoy nearly 10 hours of daylight. The cold months are over, and temperatures steadily increase throughout this month. However, April’s weather can still be unpredictable as well as the first day of April may bring some unexpected surprises.

NEW ZIP LINE FROM THE ROOF OF OUR HISTORICAL ALCRON HOTEL TO THE OLD TOWN SQUARE

“APRIL!” That is what we say in Czech when we catch somebody falling for a joke on the 1st of April. If you just believed the title about a zip line heading from the roof of our popular Alcron Hotel, then you have just become the victim of April Fools’ Day. Pranking is very popular especially among children, who are officially allowed to play mocking tricks on anyone including their parents or teachers. Just in case you happen to be in the Czech Republic, and you are not familiar with this tradition, be very careful and vigilant as Czechs can be extremely creative in ways how to make fun of someone. This custom is probably stemmed from the 16th century when the Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian. New Year’s Day was moved from April 1 to January 1. However, few people did not accept this change or forgot this change and those were called “April Fools”.

HAPPY EASTER HOLIDAYS!
This year’s Good Friday is observed on April 2nd and Easter Monday on April 5th. Easter is a magical time full of fun which normally brings some of the biggest celebrations of the year to Prague and to the whole country. Lots of old traditions are still kept in the villages. Women color the eggs; boys braid the willow twigs called “pomlazka” which they use to spank girls to symbolically keep them young and in good health. As reward, boys are treated with sweets or alcohol shots. After Noon, girls can drench the boys with water in return.

CELEBRATE EASTER WITH 5-STAR ALCRON PRODUCTS
Easter brunch at your favorite La Rotonde restaurant may not happen this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that does not mean you have to spend hours preparing a meal for your entire family. Enjoy the most delicious Easter specialties from our fine dining La Rotonde restaurant or order cocktails from our famous Be Bop Bar and have them delivered to your house! We will certainly be open for takeout meals and you can order from various packages to single items such as the traditional lamb, freshly baked “mazanec”, home-brewed dandelion liquor or cocktails from the special limited edition.

WITCHES’S NIGHT
Each year on the evening of April 30th, Czech families and friends gather around a bonfire, with an effigy of a witch they later throw into the fire as a tradition to welcome spring and warm weather. We hope that together with the witch, we will manage to burn even the Covid-19 pandemic and our luxurious Alcron Hotel will soon get a green light to welcome all the tourists back.
